Sand Creek Pro Wins Season Opener
CARMEL, Indiana – Bob Jacobs, a PGA Professional from Sand Creek Country Club in Chesterton, captured the first PING / PEPSI Indiana PGA Tournament Series event of 2002 today at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel.
Jacobs fired an even-par round of 72 and finished in a tie with Steve Jones of Turkey Run Golf Course in Waveland. Jacobs then bested Jones on the first playoff hole, where he made a 15-foot birdie putt for his first Indiana Section PGA title.
In the playoff, both players drove in the fairway. Jones’ second shot came up just short of the green, then Jacobs followed with his approach shot, which came to rest 15-feet from the hole. Jones ran his birdie putt just past the hole, opening the door for Jacobs putt for the title.
Jacobs began his round early this morning in very windy, cold conditions at Prairie View. He jumped out to a quick start by making birdie on holes 12 and 13 to get to 2-under-par. He finished his first nine with four pars and a bogey at the sixteenth hole.
After a par at the first hole, his tenth, Jacobs made birdie at the par-4 second to get back to 2-under-par for his round. After three more pars, Jacobs made a birdie, two, at the difficult, par-3 sixth hole. At that point, Jacobs was at 3-under-par for his round and in excellent position to win the title easily. However, he ran into some trouble at the par-5 seventh hole, where he made a triple-bogey, eight.
Jacobs would rebound after his troubles at seven and finish with two pars to finish at even-par, 72.
Jones’ round was not quite as eventful as Jacobs as he made 14 pars, two birdies and two bogies. His birdies came at holes five and 15 and his bogies came at eight and 11.
A trio of players finished in third place after rounds of 1-over-par 73. That group included 9-time Indiana PGA Player of the Year Todd Smith of Rock Hollow Golf Club in Peru, Alan Schulte of The Hawthorns Golf and Country Club in Fishers, and Bill Pollert of The Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin.
With his round of 72, Jones captured the Senior Tour division of the event, besting Dave Schumaker of Stonehenge Golf Club in Warsaw by two shots.
