June 16th 2009 - The 109th Indiana Amateur begins Tuesday at Rock Hollow Golf Course in Peru. In two waves of tee times beginning at 8:00 am, 156 players will take to the course to compete for the most prestigious amateur golf honor in the state. After much deliberation the Indiana Golf Association, along with South Bend Country Club, decided that it was in the best interest of the Championship to move the 2009 State Amateur to Rock Hollow G.C.
South Bend Country Club has been inundated with precipitation dating back to September. They endured 11+ inches of rain in September which caused the lake to breach the sea wall. After water sat on the golf course for several weeks another 70 inches of snowfall fell over the winter. As the snow melted this spring, more rain came including another 7 inches the past month.
All of this has left the course with some very wet areas where play would be impossible. In addition, another serious storm could cause the lake to again breach the sea wall, leaving the entire course unplayable.
Based on the conditions, the IGA believed it was in everyone’s best interest to move the Championship, and South Bend Country Club has agreed with our position.
Graciously, Rock Hollow moved a couple of outings to accommodate the IGA's needs for the week. We are very fortunate to have a facility the quality of Rock Hollow agree to step up and host this event at the last minute. Rock Hollow and the Smith family have always been very supportive of the IGA-PGA and this is truly going above and beyond the call of duty. Additionally, the IGA is very appreciative to the efforts that South Bend Country Club has put into their attempt to get their course in championship condition. It is one of Indiana's premier facilities in the state and the IGA looks forward to a future opportunity to hold the Indiana Amateur Championship at SBCC. |
