In Anticipation of a Sellout Crowd, The PGA Announces New Ticketing Procedure for 2014 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club

LOUISVILLE, KY – The PGA of America announced today a new ticketing procedure for the 2014 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club that will give priority, to early online registration. Fans should act now to reserve their spot in line for the public ticket sale, which runs from Aug. 12-Sept. 20, 2013.

At a Louisville, Ky., news conference earlier today, PGA of America officials explained that past PGA Championships at Valhalla in 1996 and 2000 were sellouts, and the 2014 PGA Championship is expected to be no different. The new procedure requires fans to complete a free online registration prior to Aug. 12 in order to be eligible to purchase tickets.

The earlier that fans register, the better positioned they will be to purchase the most popular tickets, officials said. If each individual in the PGA database who has supported past PGA of America events at Valhalla were to complete an online registration for the 2014 event, competition for tickets would be in excess of 120,000 people, and tickets would essentially be sold out for the entire week.

"Consumers’ access to tickets will be determined by how early they have registered,” said 2014 PGA Championship Director Brett Sterba. "Registrants will be placed into tiered purchasing groups that will be assigned a specific window of opportunity to purchase tickets. The sooner you register, the more likely you are to be in one of our early groups. We think this new procedure is balanced and fair, and it gives spectators some control over securing their place in line for the tickets that are most in demand.”

To help create additional purchasing options, PGA officials also announced the introduction of daily grounds tickets, which allows spectators to choose a single day of play instead of purchasing a full, weeklong pass. This is the first time daily tickets have been offered at a PGA Championship in the Louisville market.

"The fans drive the success of all our events, and we’re always working on ways to make their experience even better,” said PGA of America President Ted Bishop. "We used this registration-based tiered sales system for the first time at the 2012 PGA Championship in South Carolina, and it worked extremely well, setting PGA Championship sales records by selling 94 percent of budgeted tickets in just six weeks. The public response was overwhelmingly positive, so we are thrilled to introduce it in Louisville.”
