Nicholas Hofman Defends Stroke Play Title at the Boys State Junior Championship

July 9th, 2019

Nicholas Hofman, Lafayette, successfully defended his Boys State Junior stroke play title at the Birck Boilermaker golf Complex in West Lafayette, IN. Hofman defeated Clay Stirsman in a one-hole playoff with a birdie at the par 5, 10th hole at the Kampen Course.
Hofman won the 2018 Boys State Junior Championship stroke play and match play titles at the Kampen Course at Purdue University.
“It’s cool to do it here, my future home course,” Hofman said. “I don’t get to play out here as much during the summer so it is cool to come here and defend.”
After a first round 69 at the Ackerman-Allen Course which gave him the first round lead, Hofman fired a 2-under-par round of 70 including six birdies. Stirsman, Carmel, carded a final round 69 and both players finished at 5-under-par.
“I was trying to stay patient, which was the biggest part of today even in the playoff,” Hofman said. “I tried to stay more and more patient as the round went on.”
After a double-bogey on the par 3, 2nd, Hofman played the last 16 holes in four under par with his only bogeys coming at the 11th and 18th holes.
“I got a little too aggressive on 2,” Hofman said. “I flared a nine iron into the water and I told myself to stay patient and try to make bogey. If not, double is the worst I can make.”
With the win, Hofman will take the top seed into the match play portion of the championship as he attempts to defend his match play title.
“Now that my game is back, I can definitely have a huge impact this week in match play,” Hofman said. “I’m excited, match play is fun and we don’t get to play it that often.”
The match play portion of the championship will be held at the Kampen Course as 64 players will compete over the next three days. The round of 64 and 32 will be held on July 10. The round of 16 and the quarterfinals with follow on July 11 and the semifinals and final match will be held on July 12.
