Mallory Russell, of Evansville, captured the Howard Bailey Financial, Inc. Indiana Girls State Junior Championship after firing a 1-under-par in yesterday’s final round. She finished the Championship with rounds of 73, 74, and 71, 218 to defeat Angelica Pfefferkorn by two shots.
“It feels awesome to win,” Russell said. “I was going into this tournament right after taking third place in the 2020 Evansville Women’s City Golf Tournament, and was just looking to have some fun. I had never played on this course before, but it was super nice and I felt comfortable.”
Russell entered the final round trailing Pfefferkorn by two strokes, and tied with Madison Dabagia at 3-over-par.
“I ended round two with bogey’s on holes 17 and 18, which put me two strokes behind Angelica,” Russell said. “I went into the final round with my head in the game and my game plan ready to go.”
After making a bogey on hole one and going even-par on rest of the front nine, Russell was tied for the lead with Pfefferkorn when the leaders made the turn.
Russell gained the lead by two shots over Pfefferkorn with a birdie at the par-5 12th
, but a birdie by Pfefferkorn at the par-4 13th
, paired with a bogey by Russell cut the lead back to one.
In her last five holes, Russell maintained this lead, carding birdie on the par-4, 15th
, and the par-5, 17th
. Russell headed to the 18th
tee leading by two shots and made par to secure the 2020 Indiana Girls State Junior Championship.
“I was super motivated to win at this point,” Russell said. “I wanted more than anything to win, so I kept focus the entire time and never gave up. This win truly means a lot to me. It always feels good to take home a victory.”
