Two Amateurs lead Indiana Open Championship After Round 1

July 15th, 2019

The 104th Indiana Open Championship began at Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus, IN. After round one, amateurs Joe Weiler and Joey Ranieri lead the way with first round scores of 5-under-par, 67.
Both Weiler and Ranieri are coming off victories earlier this summer in Indiana. Weiler won the 2019 Indiana Amateur Championship at Purgatory in June and Ranieri won the 2019 IGA Match Play at Old Oakland Golf Club last week.
The two combined for 11 birdies and just two bogeys during round 1. Ranieri leads the field in birdies through round one with six accompanied by just one bogey. After a clean 34 on his front nine, Ranieri made four birdies between holes 11 and 16 to shoot a back nine 33.
Weiler birdied his first hole of the day, the par 4, 10th, and never looked back carding for more birdies and no bogeys.
I played well. I believe it was bogey-free,” “I missed three good looks on the last three holes which is a little upsetting. I struck the ball really well and played solid all around.”
Weiler had short birdie putts on seven, eight, and nine, his last three holes of the day and saw all three slide by.
“On number seven I hit it just a little bit hard, eight was a misread and on nine, I don’t know why I ever leave a putt short because it will never have a chance to go in,” Weiler said.
There are currently 21 players within four shots of the lead including Chris Smith who has won five Indiana PGA events in 2019 as well as former State Open champion Seth Fair. Smith and Fair, who were paired with Weiler for round one, shot 2-under-par 70’s and sit in a tie for eighth.
Tyler Gray sits in solo third at 4-under-par carding a 68 late in the first round.
Other notables include Ty Gingerich, the 2019 Indiana Boys State Jr. Champion, who carded a first round even-par sits five shots back and Timothy Hildebrand, 2015 Indiana Open Champion, who fired a first round 3-under-par, 69.
