Wiseman Wins Indianapolis Open by One Shot

May 18th, 2021

Timothy Wiseman of Old Capital GC began the second round of the Indiana PGA Indianapolis Open at 4-under-par and two shots behind leader Michael Asbell of Golf Club of Indiana.  With an errant tee shot on the par-4, 1st at Woodland CC, Wiseman appeared to be off to a shaky start, but ended up saving bogey – and went on to have a bogey-free remainder of his round.

Wiseman made his first birdie of the day on the par-5, 4th and began gaining momentum on leader Asbell.  With back-to-back birdies on holes 6 and 7, Wiseman grabbed a share of the lead – which he never relinquished.

“I didn’t miss the center of the fairway very often, so it felt like I didn’t have to overthink much today, said Wiseman.  “It’s really nice when you can get into those grooves where you just step up and hit it.  It started feeling easy.”

Wiseman went on to make three more birdies on holes 8, 9, and 11 to move to -9 for the tournament.  Playing two groups ahead, Nic Hofman of Lafayette was also making moves.  With a birdie on the par-4, 14th, Hofman moved to 6-under-par for the tournament and trailed Wiseman by three shots.

“Coming into this event I wanted to win,” said Wiseman.  “That was really the only thing that was on my mind.”

Heading to 15, Wiseman’s lead was still three shots, but with birdies on the par-5, 16th and the par-4, 18th, Hofman posted a 36-hole total of 8-under-par, 136 and Wiseman’s lead was only one  shot heading to 18.

“Nic definitely didn’t make it very easy on me.  I would have liked to have a couple more buffer shots going into 18, but I was able to put it down the middle and make par.”

With a 36-hole total of 9-under-par, 135, Wiseman grabbed his second victory of the season, with a previous win coming at the US Open Qualifier at the Country Club of Indianapolis.

“If you look at the names that were out there this week, there were a ton of great players,” said Wiseman.  “I’m very proud to win this event and to be able to beat a field like this.”
